Craft Beers | Brasserie Artisanale 87 | Craft Brewery Haute Vienne

ATTENTION!

07/05/26 Due to ongoing upgrade work I have no Takeaway Stock ie cans, bottles or Growlers at the moment. I do have a couple of beers on tap and the Brewery Shop/Tavern project is close to opening. Please FOLLOW me on Facebook or Instagram for news. NOTE: Please DO NOT rely on third party websites for my opening hours, most of them are totally wrong.

Our Craft Beers

Growlers.

So, what's a Growler?

Growlers are reusable, 2 litre bottles with a swing top closure designed for you to takeaway freshly poured beer.

A Growler is ideal if you're on your way to a BBQ for example. Call by the brewery (have a beer while you wait) for your Growler to be filled with lovely, chilled Craft Beer, fresh from the tap. Bring back your empty to get your deposit back or better still, get a refill.

They're not really intended for long term storage and once opened are best treated like a regular bottled beer and consumed within a few hours. Unopened they can be kept for a while if you keep them in the fridge or somewhere dark.

So, why should you try a Growler?

  • They're cost effective to you.
  • They're reusable.
  • They're more convenient than several smaller containers.
  • They're ideal for Picnics, BBQs etc.
  • They're robust.
  • There is no exposure to oxygen in the air* while filling.
  • They're fun and a little bit different.
  • They'll never laugh at you, call you names or insult your friends.

*The boring SCIENCE bit.

You may or may not know (or care) that contact with oxygen in the air is quickly very detrimental to the quality of beer, causing off flavours due to oxidization. Your Growler is filled with fresh beer using a custom made Counter Pressure Filler. So, what's one of them then?

The Growler is fitted into the filler with an airtight seal. The air is first purged from the Growler with Carbon Dioxide (beer hates air but it loves CO2) and the Growler is pressurised to the same pressure level as the keg the beer is being served from.

The beer tap is opened but because both Growler and Keg are at the same pressure, nothing happens. The pressure in the Growler is slowly released and as the CO2 escapes, cold beer begins to flow into the Growler, filling it.

Due to the balance of pressure during the filling process, there is no fizzing of the beer thus your fresh beer remains carbonated. Once filled, the last of the pressure is bled off, the Growler removed and quickly sealed. Job done. Fresh, chilled and tasty takeaway Craft Beer.

The Great Can Debate

Bottles are a pain in the bum, end of.

OK so bottles have their place, I've used them for years BUT....

  • They're heavy.
  • They're expensive.
  • They're easy to break.
  • They're costly and wasteful to recycle.
  • They don't fully protect beer from harmful exposure to light.
  • They're a pain in the arse to store, clean and sanititize.

I wouldn't have made the considerable investment in can filling and sealing equipment if I wasn't 100% sure of their superiority to bottles for modern beers.

Of course there's still a stigma in certain circles about beer in cans (notably among the permanently discontent, often found in Facebook comment sections whining about things that aren't true, things they don't understand or things that don't affect them in any way). This is largely down to the joy of whinging, a lack of knowledge of the benefits of cans or simply a sheer, debilitating terror of change. Any change! Of anything!! Ever!!!

OK, so I might be exaggerating a tad there. Or am I?

Cans are not a sign of low quality or cheap beer, they're a sign of a responsible and modern day approach to today's Craft Beer Scene. They're here, they've put their feet up and they are staying.

Finally, if you think cans make the beer taste metallic, don't drink from the can. Pour it into a glass. Like a grown up.

ECOFASS© Kegs

Lightweight, Reusable, Recyclable

Since 2014 I have used EcoFass kegs, a 'bag in a keg' concept similar to other brands however the EcoFass system features re-usable, plastic kegs with only the inner bag being disposed of, greatly reducing waste.

ECOFASS© technology allows for longer conservation of beer, once the keg has been opened, even at room temperature.

Compressed air is sufficient to dispense the beer as there is no direct contact with the liquid. unlike traditional metal kegs, or plastic kegs with an internal spear system, that have to use co2 or nitrogen.

The kegs are much lighter than steel kegs making them easier to handle and offering reduced transport weight.

The ECOFASS© concept avoids any waste because the bag is completely emptied.

When the keg is empty, the bag is removed and a new plastic or aluminum bag is inserted ready to refill.

No cleaning of the keg is required, saving water and use of aggresive, harmful chemicals, and is therefore more eco-responsible.
